How to Service a Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve

Dishwasher bosch water

When a person checks on and routinely maintains the various valves, detergent dispenser, and dish rack of their dishwasher it can keep the correct amount of water and cleaner working effectively in the machine.

Service the Water Inlet Valve

The dishwasher’s water inlet valve controls the water flow amount into the dishwasher. The valve can be activated by a timer or the solenoid. If you find that your dishwasher is not filling with water do these six things:

  1. Make sure the water supply is turned off to the dishwashing unit and make sure there is no problem with the water heater. A water heater shutdown will surely cause a shutdown of the water to the dishwasher.
  2. Check the timer. You want to make sure it is working through its programmed sequences. When both the water supply and its timer are in working order, the issue is usually the inlet valve.
  3. Check the inlet valve. The inlet valve is usually located under the dishwasher’s tub. Inlet valve malfunctions sometimes occur when a valve screen gets clogged with mineral deposits. To fix this problem, pry the screen from the inlet valve with a screwdriver and flush it thoroughly using running water. Then, you must replace the screens.
  4. When a solenoid controls the valve the solenoid is typically connected to the side of the dishwasher. Lightly tap the solenoid and the valve with the handle of a screwdriver. This usually breaks any obstructions free. Now, start the dishwasher again.
  5. If the dishwasher still does not fill up you should test the solenoid. You test the solenoid with a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM) set to the RX1 scale. First, disconnect one electrical lead to the solenoid and clip the probe of the VOM to each solenoid terminal. If the meter reads anywhere between 100 ohms to 1000 ohms the solenoid is working. If the meter reads higher than 1000 the solenoid is no longer working and must be replaced.
  6. Replace the solenoid with a new one of the same type and size. Make sure to connect the new part the same way the old one was connected.

Sometimes, an inlet valve is just badly worn or misshapen beyond repair. If the inlet valve is extremely damaged, replace the inlet valve with a new one made for the dishwasher. This valve is usually held to a mounting bracket with screws. Simply take the connection that links the valve to the water supply. Now, take the screws out and remove the valve. Install the new valve by connecting it in reverse order.

Repairing a Dishwasher Water Pump or Motor

Dishwasher pump motor

In most standard dishwashers, the water pump is situated under the lower sprayer arm. The water pump is a component that pumps the water through the dishwasher. A dishwasher water pump has two impellers. One is on the top and the other on the bottom. These impellers and other components can get clogged with food or unused detergents.

In this article, we’ll discuss how to disassemble the pump then address motor repair. Here is how to disassemble the water pump:

  1. Remove the cap holding the sprayer arm on
  2. Remove the sprayer arm, the screening, the pump housing, the bolt, the upper impeller, the food disposer blade, the spacer plate, the impeller hood, the flat plate, the O-ring, and finally, the lower impeller. Next, lay the parts out in the order you disassembled them. You do this so that you know how to reassemble them properly.
  3. Clean all the parts very well with a mild detergent solution. If you find that any of the parts are worn replace them with new ones made especially for that model of dishwasher.
  4. Replace any old seals. For example, the O-ring or other washers with brand new ones.
  5. Reassemble the pump and keep the parts in order.

Recap: to get to the water pump you must remove the sprayer arm and screen. Then, remove the pump housing, and then the bolt, then all the pump components can be removed.

Keep in mind that on some dishwashers, the lower impeller serves as a drain pump. The type of system typically has a reversible motor. Machines with nonreversible motors have drain valves as mentioned earlier. When your machine possesses the impeller pump system the water does not want to drain from the dishwasher you must clean the lower pump impeller. This usually solves the problem. If it doesn’t, call a professional service technician.

When a dishwasher motor malfunctions you should not try to fix it yourself. Make sure to call a professional service technician to make any repairs or replace the motor altogether. However, before you call for service you should check to make sure the timer works and that the dishwasher is getting power.

Most dishwasher water pump problems can be handled yourself if you follow the guidelines mentioned in this article. Again, if you have motor problems the best advice is to contact a professional service technician to fix or replace the part.

We never know how much we rely on dishwashers until they break down. Often times though, you can make the repairs yourself.
